About The Tour:
In 1922, the United States Airmail Service stood at the forefront of aviation innovation, transforming mail delivery across the country. Originally launched in 1918, airmail had evolved by this time into a more organized and increasingly reliable system, connecting major cities from New York to San Francisco. Mail was transported primarily in modified World War I-era de Havilland DH-4 biplanes, with pilots navigating using basic instruments, landmarks, and rail lines. Flights were often hazardous, with open cockpits exposing pilots to harsh weather and limited visibility. Despite these challenges, airmail pilots became known for their skill, courage, and pioneering spirit. A major breakthrough in 1922 was the introduction of a lighted transcontinental airway system. Rotating beacons and illuminated landing fields allowed for night flying, significantly reducing delivery times and making coast-to-coast airmail service faster and more dependable than ever before. This period marked a critical step in the development of modern aviation, laying the groundwork for today’s commercial air travel and nationwide logistics networks. U.S. airmail from 1922 represents both technological progress and the daring human effort that helped connect a growing nation.
